LINCOLN COUNTY LWV MEMBERS

Our membership continues to grow.  It is gratifying to see more of our members involved in local and state studies, attending Legislative hearings locally and in Salem, participating in efforts to increase school funding and becoming involved in educational programs and environmental issues.

Each member is a potential spokesperson for action in our community, and is encouraged to bring their interests and concerns to the League.  Many of us volunteer in several areas, including health care, environmental concerns, local government activities and decision making, education, public libraries, needs of the elderly...our envolvements and commitments are extensive.

Members are encouraged to bring to the League issues and concerns for discussion and understanding.  We can learn so much from one another, and working together we can find solutions.

Positions

The League Responds to Issues with Action Based on Positions. To see our current Positions on local issues, please click here.

The State of Oregon LWV has recently completed two studies: Redistricting and The Judiciary.  Last winter and spring members statewide reached concensus, arriving at positions which allow the League to advocate  for those positions.

In 2007-2009 the State of Oregon LWV will study Water Resources in Oregon, and Election Methods.  Local members are welcome to join the these study groups.

WHERE DOES THE LEAGUE STAND ON PUBLIC ISSUES?

Non Partisan means that the League of Women Voters never supports or opposes any political party or candidate.
The League of Women Voters takes action on an issue or advocates for a cause only when there is a League position that supports the issue or speaks to the issue.

Positions result from a process of study. Any given study, whether it be National, State, or Local, is thorough in its pursuit of facts and details. As the study progresses, a continuing discussion of pros and cons of each situation occurs. Prior to the results of the study being presented to the general membership, study committee members fashion consensus questions that are then addressed by the membership. Additional discussion, pro and con, takes place as members (not part of the study committee) learn the scope of the study. After the members reach consensus, the board forms positions based on that consensus.

It is the consensus statement -- the statement resulting from the consensus questions -- that becomes a position. Based on our positions, we take action in the public interest, advocating for or against particular policies, legislation, or ballot measures. Without a position on a particular issue, however, we cannot act or advocate. League members review positions annually and vote to re-adopt, modify, or drop the position.

For information about League's state and national positions, see LWV OREGON and LWV US.
